Not only are we continuing our awesome book groups, but we also began our social studies collaboration. Our topic this trimester is Westward Expansion. In book groups, students are reading such titles as "Apples to Oregon" by Deborah Hopkinson and Nancy Carpenter, "Little House in the Big Woods" by Laura Ingalls Wilder, "Pioneer Cat" by William H. Hooks, "Sarah Plain and Tall" by Patricia MacLachlan, "Brave Buffalo Fighter" by John D. Fitzgerald, and "Mr. Tucket" by Gary Paulsen.

Matinicus teacher, Pam Stock celebrates the launch with traditional Native American clothing.

Last week our Social Studies collaboration began with a whole-group launch. Prior to our meeting on the Polycoms and Tandbergs, each school had the task of creating a video expedition of another island. We wanted students to begin their learning of Westward Expansion history by first imagining what it would be like to explore a new place. A place where residents may already inhabit.

After viewing all of the videos, each school was asked to reflect on the following questions:

What were the attitudes of the expedition team as they set out and how did those attitudes change?

How do you think the residents of the island might feel about your expedition team and how would they react to your arrival?

If you planned to stay there for a long time, how might the residents’ attitudes change?

What was your reaction to other people exploring the island you live on?

Here are the expedition videos:

Frenchboro explores Monhegan

How do you think the residents of the island might feel about your expedition team and how would they react to your arrival? Frenchboro's response: Monhegan would feel marvelous and excited because we would save them from fire breathing spruce beetles. They would also feel thankful.

If you planned to stay there for a long time, how might the residents’ attitudes change? Frenchboro's response: They might get bored of us and kick us out. When people stay together too long they can get frustrated because they have to provide food, water and shelter. Our dragons may eat their dogs and ruin their buildings. They may sue us for damage.

Isle au Haut explores Frenchboro

Isle au Haut wanted to find new land, they found information.

What were the attitudes of the expedition team as they set out and how did those attitudes change? Margaret: Kind of excited when I left, but later when I couldn’t find people I felt kind of unhappy. Eliza and Kai - In the beginning we were scared that the locals were like COVE!!!! Kai and Eliza were happy that there were kids their own age. When we heard that Margaret was going to meet the locals we were worried. We thought Magaret was so brave for going first.

How do you think the residents of the island might feel about your expedition team and how would they react to your arrival? Margaret: They might be kind of confused at first because they don’t know who I am. Sofie - They would welcome us to their island island because we are new. Aiden - I think they would be happy to see me.

TLC is used to technical mishaps, and Valentine's day is no different. Although there was no blizzard to challenge our get-together, we still got a late start to our party. TLC never gives up! After some problem-solving we were all able to connect (even though we couldn't SEE Isle au Haut, we could hear them).

With some quick thinking, it was decided that each school open their Valentine's at the same time. Each school secretly created Valentine's for another school and it was up to all the kids to guess WHO sent them their Valentines.

Ashley Bryan school guesses first. After a few missed guesses, they picked correctly. Matinicus!

Matinicus also had to make a few guesses, but eventually they also picked correctly: Cliff!

Monhegan, took their time...but in the end, they guessed correctly: Frenchboro!

Frenchboro thought long and hard, but by the process of elimination, they arrived at the correct answer:

Isle au Haut!

Cliff also guessed correctly, right off the bat: Monhegan!

Even though we couldn't see Isle au Haut on the screen, the boys loved there Valentine's from:

Ashley Bryan School.

And who doesn't love surprises. Jessie made a surprise visit out to Cliff Island and also sent out awesome Valentine's and an Appalachian Trail map so that each school can keep track of her journey starting next month.

And we all know by now that every celebration we have together ends in a dance party!

After watching previous dance party's this year, Frenchboro finally found their groove and joined in!

HAPPY VALENTINES EVERYONE!

My Beloved TLC,

This feels a little like a "Dear John" letter. Like I should start off by saying, "It's not you, it's me." YOU, my TLC, are fabulous. Three years ago you were just this pipe dream that a few, unassuming island teachers fantasied about. Somehow you morphed into this cutting-edge, experience-rich, life line of a project that I know have touched and effected many lives and has completely changed mine. Actually, I think I do know how this amazing transition from dream to reality happened. It happened because of a lot of love for our island schools, a lot of hope for the future of our island kids, a whole lot of energy, persistent, desire, and hard work from a lot of very dedicated people. Now the TLC is it's own entity... with a strong following and support system and in my heart of hearts I believe that it can and will be sustained in our island schools for years to come.

That does not necessarily make leaving this project any easier for me personally. Anyone who has talked to me (or seen my facebook page!) over the last three years (this includes my friends, my relatives, islanders of all kind, the boat crew, my hairdresser, the nice grocery bagger at Hannaford's... you get the idea) has probably heard of the TLC and how much I adore this project. I would like to think of myself as one of it's biggest cheerleaders and that, my friends, will never change. What is changing, is that I will no longer be an active contributor to the project. I was lucky enough to be a founder and teacher participant for the first two years of the project and for the last six months I have LOVED working as a full-time "support-staff" for the TLC. But now, I transitioning to a full time cheerleader and follower of this work. It is off to some new adventures for me and as much as I know the time is right, and I am excited for the next leg of my journey, I can't tell you how much I will miss this work and the people within this group that I have grown to love so much.

The community of the TLC is great and now spans six island communities and includes many "landlubbers" members as well. I have met so many amazing parents, school board members, community members, and other fabulous TLC lovers who have made my life richer and brought so much energy and support to this project. Thank you to the TLC community who has given their time, support, and love to make the TLC what it is today. You are the backbone for keeping this work moving forward! I know it is all in good hands.

And then of course there are the teachers! Oh, the teachers! I am not sure if I will ever again have the opportunity to work with such a skilled, smart, fun, passionate, dedicated, and all around AMAZING group of educators. You all sure have raised the bar for what our society should expect out of our teachers. There is no doubt in my mind that I have become a smarter, kinder, more patient and confident, more dedicated and more worthy teacher because of you all. I have learned so much from you and no matter where I go in my professional path I will take those lessons with me and both my students and I will be better because of it. Many of you I have worked with for years and you have become much more than my colleagues and even more than my friends. You are my family and I love you so very much and know that you will be apart of my life for years to come.

And lastly, there are the students. The kids. MY kids. What an honor it has been to watch you all grow up with each other in this project. You are all so beautiful and kind and smart. I can't imagine having a better bunch of students to begin my teaching career with. You give me hope in this world and have given so much love to my heart. Thank you for your smiles and laughs and your energy. Thank for reminding me how important it is to be silly, to give hugs, to jump and dance! Thank you for loving my dog, for loving me, and loving eachother. I love each one of you to the moon and back and am so proud of who you are as students, leaders, and human beings.

So, fare thee well TLC. Remember to celebrate with eachother, dress up in costumes, make funny faces, organize flash mobs, make gifts for eachother, wear your t-shirts, skype and wiki your brains out, play capture the flag and FLASH, create conga-lines, give eachother hugs and kisses, take pictures, cuddle with dogs, listen to eachother, assume best intentions, grow, learn, belly laugh,... and most importantly...

NEVER STOP DANCING.

I carry you all in my heart. Please keep me in yours.

This year we held our second annual Virtual Secret Santa Party to celebrate the holidays together!

Everyone agreed that we should dress-up in our best "Holiday-Wear" for the party! Here is Monhegan's 7th grader and I looking snazzy in our holiday outfits, waiting for the party to start!

Let the festivities begin! We had all six TLC schools there to celebrate together!

y

Everyone looked very festive in their Santa hats and red and green! The Isle au Haut boys were all matchy-matchy in their hats!

And the Ashley Bryan School looked full of holiday cheer! Wait, are they eating SNACKS!? Man, we have to figure out how to share snacks virtually!

After a holiday welcome, a lot of cheering, and "Ho! Ho! Ho! - ing" it was time for each of the schools to open the gift that they received in the mail from their Secret Santa school! Monhegan Island was the first to open their gift...

Wow! Look at that awesome homemade puppet that was made as a gift! Again this year, the TLC student council voted to have all of the Secret Santa gifts be homemade or MOSTLY homemade! That just makes the gifts all the more creative AND special! Also, in each of the gifts the Secret Santa school was supposed to put in a clue to help the recipient school guess who they were! The Monhegan School guessed that their Secret Santa school was the Frenchboro School and... THEY WERE RIGHT!

Next it was the Isle au Haut Santas turn to open their gift!

Their gift including little home-made Santa sleighs that were made completely out of edible materials! DELICIOUS! It took a few guesses, but they finally figured out that their Secret Santa school was Matinicus!

Up next, it was the Cliff Island School who were ready to tear open their gift!

They got these beautiful hand woven baskets and a really cool Snowman game! Inside of their box there was a bunch of clues to help them figure out which school sent their gift... the last clue in the box said, "Our island's name rhymes with Idaho!" Any guesses!? YES! YOU'RE RIGHT! ISLE AU HAUT!

Yay! It was Frenchboro's turn to open their special box of goodies!

It was just jammed PACKED with presents and gifts, including an awesome banner for their school! They were able to figure out that their gift was from the fabulous Ashley Bryan School!

Only two more schools to go... open your presents Matinicus!

They got some lovely hand-painted Christmas ornaments and some beautiful origami boxes! And who sent such a wonderful and fabulous gift!? The Monhegan Island School!

And finally, LAST but CERTAINLY NOT LEAST... THE ASHLEY BRYAN SCHOOL GETS TO OPEN THEIR GIFT! They waited quite patiently for their turn.

They were elated to open up a gift filled with homemade magnets, decorations, AND LOLLIPOPS! SCORE! Since they were the last school to open their gifts their guess was a pretty easy one to make... It was CLIFF ISLAND who was their Secret Santa School!

YAY Secret Santa! What fun we had and what fabulous, thoughtful gifts that were given! Now THAT is the spirit of the holiday season folks! Simple, thoughtful, homemade gifts to kids who really appreciate it! Amen.

Of course you KNOW how we had to end our holiday party!?! With a little DANCE PARTY!!! Boy, does this group know how to jingle bell rock AND rock around the Christmas tree!

And here... feel like you are apart of our special event yourself! Don't we know how to have a good time!

It was time for our Color Day share on the Polyberg! We could not wait to see all our colorful friends!

Looks like a lot of the ABS kids got a case of the TLC blues on color day!

Matinicus had all kinds of color themes going on their island! They had a snowflake white kindergartner, a green fourth grader, and a polka dotted purple seventh grader!

This little ABS first grader was pretty in pink!

And a little golden third grader!

I loved all the TLC shirts woven into many of our theme days! Double TLC spirit!

AWWW! Millie had the blues too! She usually has the blues when I dress her up... but man, doesn't she look adorable?!

On Monhegan we had all in black seventh grader, a pretty purple first grader, and a blue teacher!

And even the Monhegan pre-schoolers were decked out in their color themed outfits!!!

On Isle au Haut we had all kinds of colors represented! Look at this lobster-red fifth grader!

And a blue fifth grader! I think blue was the spirit color of the day!

Starting with some MAJOR puppy love for Miss Millie! I had no idea how much these sweet boys were going to love my dog, but it made me love them even more (something I didn't know was possible, I have always had a big soft spot for those cute, quiet Isle au Haut boys!

Millie seemed quite happy and relaxed in this school house.

As Millie napped, the boys and I did some technology lessons on their laptops... I taught them how to upload movies on to their book group wikis and to change their username photo! A VERY important task for student in middle school!

We also explored how the kids can create their own school website using google sites! They were able to log onto their outerislandstlc email accounts and then create a collaborative Isle au Haut School website! So fun and they learned how to use google sites SO quickly!

After our tech lesson it was time for more Millie time!

Millie does not look like she is enjoying herself one, teeny, tiny bit!

This fifth grader seemed to fall head over heels for Miss Millie. He would take, what he called, "Millie Minutes" where he would complete a task that Ms. G gave him and then reward himself with one minute on the carpet with Millie. Say what you will, but I think this guy got a LOT accomplished with this reward system in place.

Here are some love notes Millie and I got. Pretty stinkin' sweet if you ask me.

Back to more technology lessons! This time I taught the boys how to upload videos to youtube so then they could link them from their school website!

The whole gang working on making some videos to upload. Obviously many of the videos involved... you guessed it, MILLIE!

Group picture outside of school on my last afternoon with the boys.

And our goofy picture!

Thanks Isle au Haut boys for all your love, fun, and hard work! You are one heck of a group and I love having you in the TLC family!

Spirit Week - Hat Day on Isle au Haut

I island hopped over to Isle au Haut for Hat Day of Spirit Week!
The Isle au Haut school is a mighty fine school!

Look at Ms. G's bright and sunny hat! Sure added a little cheer to a dreary island day!

Millie was VERY excited to be at the Isle au Haut school, but she was not so excited about her giraffe hat.

The Isle au Haut boys were ready to share their hats with all their TLC pals on the Polyberg!

Here is the fabulous, Elise, adorning her lovely beach hat.

Hard to even tell who this guy is on Monhegan with his full face mask and ski helmet! What a hat day outfit!

I think my favorite hat award goes to this kindergartner on Monhegan.

And the rest of Monhegan contingency looked quite stylish in their hats!

Here's the Cliff Island gang decked out in TLC hat day spirit! Whose that good lookin' blond in the back!? She is one hot mama!

And the Ashley Bryan School had full participation for hat day as well! It was fun seeing them on the Polyberg, after being in their school the day before (I kind of missed them already!)

Aw, Matinicus looked awesome in their fun and funky hats!

This fourth grader on Matinicus sprouted antlers in honor of hat day! What dedication.

And this ABS third grader created his own crazy hat to show his spirit!

I loved seeing the Isle au Haut gang up close and personal in all of their festive hats.

This sixth grader looked like Ms. G with his hat... the hair matched Ms. G's perfectly!

And this kiddo created his own last minute "knitting bag hat" to show the group!

Not only did this fifth grader have a super cool hat to share, but he also had a super cool swagger when he modeled his head wear!

And of course Ms. G had to show off her fabulous hat with all of it's fabulous decorative pins!

I loved this Angry Bird hat worn by one of the students on Frenchboro.

And a brother/sister hat duo on Frenchboro!

And an adorable mother/son duo as well! So much fun!

Lastly, Elise showed off her pug, Bentley's, cute little beanie hat! I love that even our animals get in on TLC Spirit Week! We sure know how to have fun!

Spirit Week - Twin/Triplet Day at the Ashley Bryan School!

For our second day of our TLC spirit week we had a new theme... TWIN/TRIPLET DAY! I think I was MOST excited about this day...

And Millie was too! She got to be twins with her new BFF, Ruby! Can you even tell them apart!?

TLC twinsies!

When I got to the Ashley Bryan School that morning I kept thinking I was seeing DOUBLE! Their were twins EVERYWHERE! Look at these two cute twin girls!

And it looks like we have a some triplets on our hands as well! Camo triplets no less!

Of course the teachers had to get in on the fun! Ms. Donna, Ms. Lindsay and I were the pregnant TLC triplets! Hard to tell which one is really pregnant, huh!? Well, we actually had a pregnant quadruplet as well... but we had to wait for our TLC polyberg check-in to see who that was...

Yep, that's right... Mr. H on Cliff Island was our quadruplet! Isn't he glowing!?

During our TLC check in on the Polyberg we had all the twin and triplets stand up and show off their matching outfits!

On Monhegan the first grader and pre-schoolers were triplets with someone special on another island...

Their triplet was Heidi on Cliff! Good like Heidi often acts like a first grader/pre-schooler; she was a perfect fit!

Mary and the other pre-schooler on Monhegan were twins! Aren't they adorable!?

And these two camo ABS students were triplets with...

All of the Cliff kids looked to be twins and triplets! Matchy, matchy!

We have some flannel twins on Matinicus!

The Frenchboro school had a pretty easy time all looking like eachother since they are all related! So cute!

Showing off their outfits at ABS!

Time for the puppies to show off their outfits too!

These two ABS third graders really are twins, so for twin day they decided to dress up as one another! They looked AMAZING!

Then it was time to dress up Millie even more! Nothing like dressing up for Spirit Week! Such a blast and it was such fun to be at the Ashley Bryan School for the beginning of Spirit Week. Thanks ABS students and teachers for having me and Millie! You guys are just the best!

Last Book Groups of the Trimester!

Not only did we have TLC spirit week last week but we also had the last book group meetings of the trimester!

It was the first planned activity the TLC student council organized this year and boy, was it fun! The student council brainstormed ideas for the different theme days and then had the rest of the TLC students vote on which they liked best! What a democratic society this group is!

The results came back to the student council and they then organized the week with a different theme everyday. The first theme day of spirit week was an oldy but goody... PAJAMA DAY!

Millie and I were on Islesford for Pajama Day and we were VERY excited to wear our jammies to the Ashley Bryan School! How fun.

Miss Donna's dog, Ruby, also found some jammies to wear. Aren't they cute!?

As we walked to school we were BOMBARDED by the ABS kids! Man, was I excited to see those happy little faces! The Ashley Bryan kids and I go wayyyy back! They were some of the first kids I really got to know in the TLC and I have just loved watching them grow up over the last three years!

During morning meeting both Ruby and Millie got to participate during greeting time. Each student (and teacher) shook the dogs hands! What lucky little canines!

After morning meeting we had to measure Ms. Eysnogle's tummy to see how much her little baby Lucy (our first TLC baby!) grew! Notice that both Ms. Eysnogle and Ms. Donna were in their jammies! Lots of spirit!

The Ashley Bryan School gave a little catwalk fashion show of all their pajama outfits!

And Matinicus looks cozy as well! Their teacher, Pam, even brought her favorite stuffed animal in for Pajama Day! Extra spirit points to her!

The Frenchboro School stood on their chairs to show off their awesome jim-jams!

But it was Lisa on Isle au Haut who won the most TLC spirit points! She even wore curlers in her hair!

The whole Isle au Haut gang had some awesome looking pajama outfits.

We ended our share time with some jammie dancing!

After our share time the ABS kids did some work and then before I knew it, it was time for outdoor recess! And really, what could be better then outdoor recess?!

Outdoor recess in your jammies of course!!!

This one was riding in the wee little swing! She looks a little squished!

Ut oh! Time to head inside!

Back to work. Work is not as fun as recess, even if you are in your jammies.

But one of the cute ABS kids wrote this fabulous piece about his favorite animals, including Ruby and Millie!

Talk about motivation for writing... he had his writing muses in class with him!

After more morning work it was time for lunch and another round of recess, Millie's favorite!

Millie's second favorite is reading time...

Because reading time means snuggle time with a whole lot of comfy, cozy children who all happen to be in their PAJAMAS!

I mean, really, can you even stand it!?

I, myself, also had a fabulous reading partner! So much fun to be in the ABS classroom!

By the end of the day we were all exhausted! Good thing we were all ready for bed already with our pajamas on! Can't wait for day two of spirit week!
