Midcoast Fall Field Trip - Morning of Day #2

With less than 48 hours together every MINUTE of our field trip had to filled up with fun, learning, and pure TLC excitement!

That is why we were up bright and early on day two to get our adventure started!

Everyone enjoyed a scrumptious breakfast at the hotel and filled their bodies with some nourishment to prepare for the day's events!

I enjoyed filling my camera roll with cuteness! Look at these faces!

We headed back to the church to have our morning programs...

Everyone was decked out in their TLC t-shirts, which makes for an even more festive looking day!

Millie, the TLC mascot, made a guest appearance that morning as well!

Once all the troops arrived it was time for morning meeting.

Our TLC student council president was in charge of leading the activities for morning meeting.

She did a fabulous job of choosing games that were fun for all the ages in our big group!

Once we had some large group time, we split off into TLC "olders" and "youngers" for our first activities of the morning. Miss Lauren from the Ashley Bryan School took our pre-k through second graders into one of the classrooms to do some fun and hands-on science lessons.

Students learned about the life cycle, the food chain and the differences between prey and predators.

They made some sweet masks to go along with their learning activities.

Meanwhile, our 3rd through 8th graders were back in the main room having a VERY special presentation by Mary Cerullo, author of the book, City Fish, Country Fish

Mary was brought to us through the wonderful organization, Island Readers and Writers! IRW works to connect Maine based authors and illustrators to island and coastal schools around the state. Many of our island schools have been lucky enough to have IRW come directly to their schools, but this was the first time IRW were able to bring their programming to our TLC field trip! It was such a treat...

Mary gave a dynamic presentation about the different types of fish and marine life she writes about in her book.

Many of our TLC students know a whole lot about marine biology already, but our students were completely engaged in the new information they were learning from Mary!

Once Mary finished her presentation, she worked with smaller groups of students to have them created their own "fish profile."

Students got to either focus on a real fish that they wanted to learn more about or create their own species of fish and then fill out a "profile" describing different features and habits.

Students could use Mary's book and other references that she brought for inspiration and/or information gathering.

Students worked diligently, and then got the opportunity to share their profiles with Mary and the rest of their peers.

Meanwhile, the rest of the older group was off working with Miss Lauren. This group was learning about Jane Goodall's organization, Roots and Shoots

Roots and shoots is a youth-led community action program that focuses on creating solutions for environmental challenges, which fits in perfectly with our island based science unit! Miss Lauren helped our students think of environmental challenges that their islands face and then steps they might take to put some action into place.

And then we can't forget about the youngers! They were having a very special "story-hour," hosted by Mr. Ben, the children's librarian from the Rockport Library!

Mr. Ben read over a dozen books and also handed out some very popular coloring pages!

It was the perfect morning activity for our youngers to color and listen to stories together as a group.

This might be one of my favorite photos of the day. What a great time our youngers had with Mr. Ben!

While all of our TLC students were busy with books and activities, our TLC parents met for an "island parent mixer" hosted by one of our FABULOUS TLC super-stars, Miss Cari! This is such a cool chance for our parents to just take some time to get to know one another and talk about some of the different challenges and enjoyments they all experience living, working, and raising kids on islands!

Soon it was time for another small group to work with Mary for the "fish profile" activity.

And another group was up for learning about "roots and shoots" with Miss Lauren.

After the quiet reading time with Mr. Ben, the youngers were excited to run off some of their energy outside!

Lauren Jacbos from Healthy Hometowns lead our pre-k through 2nd graders in some outdoor physical activities!

Inside our TLC parent team were now prepping for our mid-day break!

It was almost lunchtime, and I know our troops were getting hungry after ALL the activity that morning!

But before lunch it was time to say goodbye to Mary and take a photo of our students and their new favorite author! Because of Mary and Island Readers and Writers, our students each got their own signed copy of Mary's book! For some of these kids, it was the first time they had ever met a real, live author. What an experience!

What an awesome and busy morning! I am exhausted just reliving it all. Stay tuned to see what we had in store for the afternoon!
