Midcoast Fall Field Trip - Day #3

Can you believe it was already the last day of our field trip? We couldn't believe it either!!

We had another early morning filled with breakfast...

And lots of bed head!

Seriously epic bed head!

It seems (almost) everyone was ready for our last morning of adventures!

Here are my roommates for the trip... somehow I always get stuck with the stinky middle-school boys (don't worry though, they are my favorite!)

Here's another group of roommates! These three third-graders are all from different islands and had a great time staying with their teacher chaperones!

We hit the road and headed to Port Clyde to visit Herring Gut Learning Center for a lesson in aquaponics and seaweed identification!

Such cute little listeners at Herring Gut!

Per usual, our group got broken up into olders and youngers. The olders stayed in one classroom to participate in a program called "Seaweed Salad."

They learned how to identify some of the most common seaweeds in Maine.

And they got the chance to taste some different types of seaweed products.

Even our parents couldn't resist trying some seaweed.

Hard to tell from these faces if they actually liked the taste!

Some of them gave the seaweed a double thumbs up for yumminess!

Meanwhile, the youngers were getting a tour of the aquaponics facility!

They learned what aquaponics is and how it works.

And they too, got the chance to do some taste-testing!

It was time to switch so our youngers went to learn about seaweed...

Now that is some seaweed!

And the olders headed to the greenhouse.

They also got to check out the fish hatchery before it was time to head to our last program of the trip...

THE PUFFIN CENTER!

Look at these two little birdies burrowing at the Puffin Center!

At the Puffin Center we had a great presentation by one of the educators there about puffins and their habitats here in Maine.

We took part in an activity creating our own mini bird guides.

And got the opportunity to explore some "bird mystery boxes" that were filled with clues about native Maine birds.

Students had to use the clues to figure what bird species the mystery box was focused on.

The clues included costumes of what the birds look like.

Along with lunch boxes filled with what the bird eats

And also a bag of materials that the birds make their nests out of!

Once students figured out what the mystery bird in the box was, they added information about the bird to their bird guide!

It was an extremely fun activity and worth-while trip to the Puffin Center!

Needless-to-say, the entire field trip was more than a worth-while experience. Our field trips are the glue that keeps the TLC together. We need opportunities like these to spend time face-to-face in order to make the virtual collaboration we do throughout the rest of the year feel valuable. It is through these field trips that we make and foster relationships and create memorable social and learning opportunities for our students.

Thank you to all who made this trip another TLC success! It takes a village, an island, an entire community!

GO TLC!
