SEA Camp for TLC Olders!

There is no rest for the weary, at least if you are a TLC middle schooler! The week after inter-island event on Great Cranberry Island we scooped up our TLC middle schoolers and brought them on a three day, two night excursion to the Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park.

It was there that our TLC students met up with other students from Swan's Island and the Tremont School to take part in the Schoodic Education Adventure Program!

On day one of the adventure, students participated in GPS mapping program and a forest succession study.

Some of the students don't look too thrilled... I think they thought SEA camp going to going be "easy!" But it was a lot of hard work! (don't let them fool you, it was super fun too!)

Students got to play an interactive game using  larger-than-life map of the coast of Maine!

We were grateful for the fabulous stretch of weather, since we were outside for much of our programming! It was also so awesome that other middle schoolers joined us at Schoodic, because it gave our TLC kids a chance to make some new friends.

During our evening programming, students got to create hand-painted tiles of local sea creatures that are going to be displayed in one of the halls on the Schoodic campus.

They used field guides and other science books for inspiration.

Look at these beautiful pieces of work!

We were so lucky to have so many amazing Schoodic educators teaching us! Here our students were participating in a lesson about tides before heading down to the tidal pool for some hands-on exploration!

Almost time to get exploring...

TIDAL POOL TIME!

Students were partnered up to find as many different specimens of plant and animal life as they could.

Crabs were just one of the dozens of specimens that students were able to discover in about 20 minutes of exploration. These kids are tidal pool professionals!

Next up on the program agenda, a biological inventory of the forest!

All of these lessons fit PERFECTLY in our TLC curriculum for trimester-one since we were studying Island Ecology and Biology!

One of the last programs we participated in was called "photo journalism!" Students photographed and researched a specific living species and then created a short article to share with their teachers and classmates back on their islands. I think it was one of students' favorites! They felt like really science journalist!

And here is our TLC representation... middle schoolers from Monhegan, Isle au Haut, and the Cranberry Isles!

I am hoping that SEA Camp may become a new TLC tradition! It was a fabulous program lead by passionate educators (and really great food!)
