First Trimester Book Groups - Fall 2013

Next week will mark the end of our first trimester of book groups! Wow, how time flies in the land of the TLC. Here is a little look at how book groups looked this fall...

This time around students used computers, laptops, tanbergs, and polycoms to connect with their book groups that were made up of students and teachers from different island schools.

 

Students and teachers used the platform zoom.us to connect virtually once and week to read, write, and discuss all things books!

 

Each of the groups read a book or book(s) that had an Asian theme to tie into our Asia Unit which we were focusing on in Social Studies this trimester.

The two oldest 8th graders in the TLC (one from Matinicus and one from Monhegan) have been reading the novel, The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck and dove into deep themes dealing with oppression of women, wealth in Asian culture, and man's dependence on natural resources. Their book group teacher is from the Ashley Bryan School on Islesford... what a fabulous job she has done with them.

 

Another group of TLC middle schoolers have been reading the book Keeping Corder by Kashmire Sheth which follows an Indian's girl and her experience with the caste system within her culture. The students in this group (two from the Cranberry Isles and one from Isle au Haut) have been learning the meaning of different Hindu words that are in the book.

We have another group reading the book The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis which is a story about a boy who lives in Afghanistan and lives under the run of the Taliban.

 

Some of our younger groups are reading multiple books of shorter length but they are still working together to answer some in-depth questions!

 

In this second grade group a student on Monhegan shared her book cover design with her group member on Islesford!


Our youngest book group of all enjoyed having books read-aloud to them by their teacher on Cliff Island. This group was made up of students from Cliff, Matinicus, Monhegan, and Islesford.

 


After the youngers have a story read to them they take part in a hands-on activity that they then share with the rest of their group whether it be a drawing, craft, or other fun creation.

Book groups are one of the strongest facets of the TLC because it gives students the opportunity to work, learn, and socialize with others who are in similar grades, which is not always possible in small island schools!
