Fall Field Trip: Day #2 (MORNING!)

We ended up doing SO much on day two of our fall field trip that I had to break it up into a morning blog post, afternoon post, AND evening post! We sure know how to make the most of our TLC field trips, that is for sure!

Day two started out with an early breakfast and then STRAIGHT to work. And by work I mean morning meeting.

Ms. Pam from Matinicus lead the kids in a great exercise that got them learning about this area of Western Maine that we were visiting. Pam lives only a few miles down the road from the Mollyocket Motel so she was an excellent leader for our morning activities... and the kids were looking mighty engaged, if you ask me.

After spending some time looking through travel guides and brochures about the surrounding area, the kids got to share what they learned about this part of Western Maine! Who know there was SO much to do!?

We ended morning meeting with a partner activity that showed the kids who their partners were going to be for the Mineralogy Expedition we were going to later that morning. Each student had a different small illustration on their name tag that was given to them that morning. They then had to find the other student in the group who had the SAME illustration. Students were paired with someone that was close to their age, but maybe someone they haven't normally worked with! This little pair above was one of the cutest!

Once in their pairs, the students played a round of "Museum" where one student is the "artist" and one person is the "statue." The "curator," that was me, gave the artist a theme for the museum and each of them had to sculpt their statue into something to represent that theme!

The first theme of the museum was "Rock Star!"

Even our teachers got into being "sculpted!"

The other theme of the museum was "Spooky!" in honor of Halloween. These statues don't look all that spooky, but they were awfully cute!

After a fun and FULL morning meeting we had our FIRST meeting of our Fall Book Groups! This year we have EIGHT book groups that are divided up depending on students reading abilities. That means that every single one of our TLC teachers have their own book groups they are responsible for!

During their face-to-face meeting students got the chance to choose the book they wanted to read, brainstorm some ideas and expectations for what their group should accomplish, and check out some of the technology they are going to use to work collaboratively together once they are all back on their individual islands!

For this round of book groups the theme of the books are focused on Asia, since that is what the TLC is studying this trimester in Social Studies.

Some of the groups dove right into the reading of their books!

Other book groups did some activities and crafts surrounding the theme of their books. The youngest book group created Chinese lanterns to go along with a picture book their leader read to them about Chinese culture.

Now that the students and teachers have all met face-to-face it will be easy for them to pick up where they left off later in the month through technology platforms like "zoom" and the "poly-bergs!" GO BOOK GROUPS!

Once the book groups were wrapped up everyone loaded into their cars and headed over to the Bethel Outdoor Adventure and Campground for our MINERALOGY EXPEDITION! None of us really knew what to expect on this expedition but it turned out to be more fun then we could of ever imagined!

The kids were broken up into the pairs they worked with during morning meeting time and were each given 10 gallon buckets FILLED of materials gathered from several local mines!

The kids got to sift and shake through the materials to search for special rocks and gems.

Students and teachers worked together with the "Rock Guides" who lead the expedition to identify some of the interesting specimens they found!

Everyone got their hands dirty with this expedition and yet they all had big smiles on their faces!

It was also the perfect program for the TLC because there was something for all ages! I mean, really, are you ever too young (or old) to enjoy digging in the dirt!?

Students found everything from amethyst to tourmaline to quartz in their buckets! Everyone looked and sounded like real geologist as they found and identified rocks and gems.

And the best part!? Everyone got to bring home an entire BAG of rocks and gems they found! You wouldn't believe how many rocks these kids tried to stuff into their bags!

And I am not sure who were more excited about their special finds... the kids or the teachers!?

Look at the intensity on their faces! I am pretty sure these two were the last to come eat lunch because they were just SO into this expedition!

All and all it was an awesome and engaging program that really tied in perfectly with our science curriculum during our first trimester! The TLC used their fundraising money to pay for students to participate in this program so thank you to all those who have contributed to our program through t-shirt sales and other fun island fundraisers! This is what that type of funding goes to! Pretty awesome.
