Guest Student Blogger - Rocks and Minerals Unit!

Complex Crystals

By 6th Grade Student on Isle au Haut!

Off the coast of Maine there are 6 islands, more formally known as the TLC, teaching learning collaborative. On all 6 islands (including Isle au Haut) there are schools, and in those schools there are anywhere from 3 to 14 students. A total of all island kids counted up, would be only about 34. Due to the small number of kids, the teachers of the islands banded together one evening, had numerous brain storms, and thus the TLC was born!

Well incase you didn’t get the memo, the TLC is like, one huge school! Much like a normal school we do projects and even sometimes classes together, but the more exciting of the 2 would be field trips of course!

Speaking of field trips, the TLC has one coming up. We are going on this field trip due to what we are studying in science. We are learning more about rocks and minerals, and yeah, I’m sure you knew that a mineral is a naturally formed, inorganic solid with a crystalline structure, right? Anyway, because of this, the TLC conjured up an idea to go on a field trip to Bethel to go.... ROCK HOUND’IN!

Well, here’s the log:

Monday: News of field trip.

Tuesday: Preparation

Wednesday: Writing this log...

Thursday: Rock box received **

Friday: Music day. (so close to trip!!)

Saturday:Weekend.

Sunday: Weekend

Monday: So close now, more rock boxes

Tuesday: Finalize presentation!

Wednesday: The Journey Begins...

** In case your wondering, rock boxes are a part of our earth science program. All the islands sent one another samples of rocks, sand and other things from all 6 islands. We studied the sand and rocks, then compared and recorded results on charts!

(Don't forget to leave a comment letting our awesome guest bloggers know what you thought about their piece! Feel free to ask questions or just let them know what an great job they did!)

Great writing! What was your favorite part of the trip?

October 29, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBiggest fan!

You guys are such "rock stars! I love this blog post, and I love Isle au Haut with all your rocking and rolling teachers and students. And everyone knows I love the TLC.

I would love to hear about what you found out when you compared the island rocks from our seven islands. The bedrock of the Cranberry Isles consists exclusively of volcanic ash, AKA basalt, except some small outcrops of granite on Great Cranberry. But the glaciers dumped all sorts of other rocks on our islands when they passed through.
