Inter-Island Event on Cliff Island - Day 1

September 2012

Late September brought our annual Inter-Island Event, which in the past has been a one-night, whirl-wind field trip that is hosted by a different outer-island every year. It's always jammed packed with workshops, games, and activities that are suppose to bring the island kids together! Due to much of the connections that have been formed between the students and teachers of the TLC the Inter-Island Event (better known to us as the IIE) has morphed into just another amazing opportunity to work and play and collaborate with our TLC peers who we have formed this amazing and really, unbreakable bond with! In truth, IIE is kind of like our 48 recess that our kids get to have together and we are truly all HUGE fans of this fabulous annual event.

This year marked a lot of exciting firsts for the IIE...

It was the FIRST time Cliff Island hosted the IIE! It was also the first time that we made IIE a TWO night field trip! Since there was a lot of traveling that had to be done for everyone to get to Cliff Island the teachers decided it would make more sense for everyone to stay for two nights to really make our time together worth while!

I was fortunate enough to be on Cliff the day before the rest of the schools arrived! That means I got to be on the dock as the Cliff Island School welcomed their treasured guests!

Here comes the ferry holding the kids from the FIVE other islands schools that were going to TAKE OVER Cliff Island for the next 36-ish hours!

The "welcoming crew" could NOT have been more excited! Look at those awesome signs they prepared!

And look at all those happy TLC campers! They were ready for a big IIE love fest.

Once the troops had landed on island we headed straight to the "cove" where everyone would be camping out for the event!

There is a lot of initial team work that goes into setting up tents. It is really an excellent ice breaker and way to start our collaborative time together. At past IIEs, our camp sites were often broke up according to schools... now the kids look forward to camping with their buddies from other schools and teachers and chaperones are just mixed all around the student tents!

Even the youngest members of the TLC helped pitch in!

Once the tents were up, the kids all gathered together to play some welcome games lead by our fearless IIE leader, Mr. Holloway from the Cliff Island School! He always has some REALLY cool games up his sleeve!

Look at this good-looking boy line-up! We have boys from Isle au Haut, Matinicus, Cliff, and the Ashley Bryan School all next to each other. If I didn't know any better I would just figure they were all from the same school! I guess now they really are... the school of the TLC!

Time to bring out the parachute for some more fun games!

The instructions were for all the kids to get under the parachute and sit on the edges... but I think this little guy from the Ashley Bryan School had the right idea!

Time to play "life guard!" A super fun parachute game!

Ut oh! Lifeguard! Lifeguard! Someone is getting pulled under!

A successful rescue!

Not only is it wonderful that all the TLC kids get to be reunited but the teachers love seeing their colleagues and even more their friends from all the island schools as well. Ms. Eysnogle is showing off her super sweet baby bump to her TLC mama-bear, Ms. G!

Even Ms. Eysnogle's baby-bump is included in our TLC love. She gets her own name tag! We cannot wait to meet you Luciana! You have six island schools who already adore you!

Sweet faces in the parachute!

And more sweet faces popping out of tents!

The sweet faces were everywhere! They sure look happy don't they!?

After lots of games and fun we headed to the community hall for dinner. Heidi from Cliff gave some opening remarks, thank-yous, and welcomes! We were all just SO excited to be together!

Dinner time! Delicious lasagna made by the Cliff Island community!

Once dinner was done, Ms. Donna from the Ashley Bryan School lead the group in a "government" inspired activity that corresponds with our TLC curriculum this trimester.

The kids were divided into groups that had student leaders in each of them! The kids were given a "right" that they had within the TLC. For example one group was given a piece of paper saying, "Everyone in the TLC has the right to collaborate via technology!"

The group had to work together to come up with examples of what that right might look like within their day to day work with the TLC! Such as using computers to skype for book groups.

The group then got an opportunity to steal another group's right and create a short skit showing what it would look like to "abuse" a right of the TLC! That might look like throwing your computer out the window when skype wasn't working correctly!

The kids got a chance to share their skits with the larger group. It was a fun and creative way for the kids to talk about rights and also their work together in the TLC!

By the end of the activity it was clear  that the kids were getting quite tired from their day of travels and excitement. Here a fifth grader from the Ashley Bryan School snuggles a kindergartner from the Frenchboro that she literally just met for the first time hours before. The love that these island kids have for each other is pretty remarkable.

This Matinicus fourth grader and this Frenchboro first grader hit it off right away! They both has such awesome senses of humor and goofy dispositions!

And this seventh grader from Monhegan shares his lap with TWO third graders from the Ashley Bryan School.

You can already tell that this IIE was going to be filled with some pretty sweet and wonderful memories!

Even my dog, and TLC mascot, Millie,  was completely exhausted from the events of day one! It was time for everyone to get some major rest to prepare for all the excitement that day two would surely bring!
