One of our most successful facets of the TLC project are our inter-island book groups! Since the first year of our collaboration together, the TLC schools have had inter-island book groups where students and teachers have used different technology platforms to read and discuss a common book together.

In the past we have done everything from have all students in the TLC read a common book to having SEVEN different TLC book groups happening at the same time! We have TLC book groups ever trimester and they have been broken up depending on student reading levels, grade levels, and even students' personal interests in literature!

TLC teachers take responsibility for different groups, meaning that a teacher on one island may be a book group leader for students on several other islands! Our book groups use skype and our schools' video conferencing units to meet twice a week to discuss the book and collaborate on work that directly relates to the reading. Teachers and students use wikispaces to post and complete assignments and respond to online discussion questions! This past year we had six book groups lead by seven different island teachers on six different islands!

Here is a list of the books our TLC teachers and students have enjoyed in their book groups this past school year:

The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck

Keeping Corner by Kashmire Sheth

The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis

Wangari's Trees of Peace: A true story from Africa by Jeanette Winter

A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park

Beatrice's Goat by Page McBrier

Brother's in Hope by Mary Williams

Ashley Bryan's African Tales, Uh-Huh by Ashley Bryan
